Wedding Cake Trends for 2014

Wedding Cake Trends for 2014

Wouldn’t it be great if you could see into the future and tell what wedding trend is in for the year 2014? Lucky for us the wedding cake experts, Sweet Inspirations, have got a pulse on the wedding cake industry and have told us what is in this year. Wedding cakes are going to get taller, bigger and more extravagant in 2014. This year will see a merging of fashion and cake with trends such as lace, ribbons, ruffles, pleats, pearl beading and bling being incorporated into the cake designs. Here is more on the new wedding cake trends we expect to see this year:

Shape:

Round remains the all-time bride’s favorite shape.

Colour:

The colour that will be popular this year is turquoise; either turquoise blue or turquoise green.
This goes well with fuchsia, orange, lime green, peach, purple and even red. It looks fantastic on cake especially against a white cake background.

Minimalistic:

Wedding Cakes are taking on an elegant, simple look as brides realize that less is more. For this look, aim for minimal colour and texture with a pop of fun colour. You could decide not to have any colour on the wedding cake and instead have the covering and decorations all in white.
If you are the adventurous type you could have an all-white with a colour popping say in the flowers on the top tier or a single tier being in a different colour.

Flavor:

Out with Fruit cake and in with variety. Brides can now have at least two flavors in their wedding cake. However, keep in mind that only a fruit cake will keep for that one year anniversary.
Make the cake the center of attention especially that period between the guests arriving for the reception and the couple arriving from the photo session.

This can be achieved by unique designs like the topsy-turvy design or a cake that defies gravity like an inverted cake.

Wedding gown inspired cakes:

A bride can now have her dress and eat it too. Inspiration for the cake design can be borrowed from the wedding gown.
Edible Lace, pleats, pearls or ruffles can all be incorporated. The bride needs to carry a photo of the wedding gown for the cake tasting appointment.

Destinations:

With a lot of brides doing destination weddings, it follows that the destination theme would also be captured in the cake. From beach themes to game drive themes, the sky is the limit.

Cake Combo:

This is where the brides has a one or two tier cake accompanied by cupcakes all arranged as one center piece. To pull this off one needs to have the same décor theme running in all the cakes.
Matching the bridal bouquet or center piece flowers to the sugar flowers on the cake:
For this, you need to get a photo of your intended bouquet or center piece from your florist as you visit your baker.
Also find out if the baker can replicate the flowers in sugar.
Monograms have moved from the top tier and are now being worked into the cake design.

Unusual:

From pillow shapes to vintage cars, brides are now making cakes in unusual shapes that represent what they love.

Ombre:

This is a cake with graded hues of a single colour. It will work if don't want to commit to a bold-hued cake.

Lace:

This has made a comeback not only in wedding gowns but also in cakes.

Bejeweled cakes:

This not only adds sparkle to your cake but it also gives it a modern and elegant theme.
This can be incorporated in the topper, the cake stand, and the cake separators, in the accents or on the cake itself.

Nude or un-iced wedding cakes:

These are wedding cakes without frosting or with see through frosting on the sides. This is a fun themed cake that may have frosting, fruits and flowers on top.
The choices are endless. This cake follows no rules and can work with a couple who are not uptight about their wedding.

Vows:

You can now incorporate your wedding vows onto the cake.
This could work out in every tier or just your favorite line on a single tier.

Rustic:

For the fun loving bride who does not care much for clean lines and a neat finish then this is the look for you.

Black:

A lot of brides are having a combination of black and another colour as their theme colours-black & fuchsia, Black and Yellow, black and red etc. You can now have black incorporated in the cake color. It can either be an accent or be on every alternate tier.
Now that you know what trends are in, you can now confidently step out of the box and chose a cake that will impress your guests.
